Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course.
We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island.
Leaving the beauty of the sound is not easy nor is this climb up and away from the water, be prepared for this hill it sneaks up on you also be sure and take and eat a Gu at the Mile 16 aid station before you get here. You're gonna need the boost. If you haven't experimented with energy gels we recommend you try them because they really help. Ok, back to this hill its not too long or steep but its the beginning of what we like to call the, 'I'm getting fussy zone'. It's where your body knows damn well that you are pushing it beyond most reasonable limits and your mind is still trying to tell you that this is really fun, the problem neither can agree on anything for very long and just when you've settled in to the fact that this truly is going to get rough they switch roles with your mind now going...argghhh and your body suddenly feeling fabulous. Welcome to marathon running! If you don't have a great sense of humor (you really should work on getting one soon http://www.lunarmarathon.com/) cause you need one to be successful at this very bizarre sport.
Anyway, the scenery is just splendid here, a winding tree lined road with soft light, the newly paved road is often covered with pine needles and fallen leaves (not slippery though) after you get up the hill you have a rather sharp decent be sure and make a conscious effort to relax as a gift to yourself for toughing it out on the hill you've just ascended. Mile 17 is just ahead on a small upgrade. Congratulations you now have it down to single digits, only 9.2 miles to go! Now THIS is what you train for!
Visit the Jesup Memorial Library http://www.jesup.lib.me.us/ located on Mt Desert Street in Bar Harbor for all your reading pleasure. If you are a workaholic and really need a project feel free to research archived copies of local newspapers for old race results (pre internet era) and send them to Maine Running History http://www.mainerunninghistory.org/
ad our other marathon course previews and tips:
