The intersection of Pretty Marsh Rd and Rt 102 at the flashing yellow light (park at the Somesville fire station and walk across the road) to cheer, Mile 20.9 2. The Somesville Flats anywhere between Mile 21 and 22, BE SURE and park on the opposite side of the road (right) from where the marathoners are running. This mile is a darned tough one so cheer on you favorite marathoner here as well as everyone else, they (we) really appreciate your support! Tip: bring noise makers, cow bells, whistles, or if you are a musician feel free to use our stage (the marathon course) and a very appreciative audience (marathoners!) Must try this: For a fabulous lunch try Michelle's Brown bag located in down town Bar Harbor at Main and Mt. Desert Street http://www.members.boardhost.com/crowathletics/msg/1156962115.top
Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course.
We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island.
Once you reach this part of any marathon its not unusual to start to have encounters with one of the nemesis of marathoners everwhere, "the bad patch" when you start feeling bad rest assured its normal. These patches are where you suddenly might experience any combination of not so great emotions ranging from fatigue to despair but rest assured they come and go quickly. We like to tell people that all the training you've done is intended to get you through the tough stuff not the easy miles so rely on your training when you feel yucky or have doubts and you'll get through it, trust us, we've been there! Mile 14 is located in a small stand of white birch trees next you turn left onto Sargeant Drive.(please note that the entire length of Sargeant Drive is closed to traffic) This mile is flat or downhill. First you pass the Northeast Harbor Golf Club on your right. Its not unusual to see deer browsing on the edges of the fairways but few golfers are ever seen in Oct. On your left are the manicured driveways of summer homes along Somes Sound. You can always tell a summer house cause they seem to name them, you'll see the small wooden signs proclaiming that you have arrived at, "Mossy Sea Haven or Ledge Field" (for example! ) A nice downhill takes you to mile 15. 11.2 miles to go!
