There is nothing but water between where you are and Europe. The road bends to the right and you'll be running thru a sea of color, stunning oranges, yellows and reds courtesy of our outrageous fall foliage season all complimented with filtered views thru the trees of the blue water on your left. The area you are now traveling through is also home to the Rockefeller family, Martha Stewart , Dick Wolf (creator and producer Law & Order drama series) among others. Enjoy the native granite stone walls and wonderfully landscaped and natural setting that feature moss, cedar fences and a perfectly winding road. You'll bear left at the next two intersections and mile 8 is about halfway down just after the second turn, it features a short steep descent. Be careful so you don't beat your legs on this drop. The ten seconds you gain by flying down this hill will do you a lot more harm than good in the long run, just relax and enjoy the view. 18.2 miles to go! Pack a picnic and go climb a mountain. Get yourself a trail map, (available all over MDI at various shops and stores.) There are many easy and short hikes and many long difficult ones to choose from, some of our favorites are the Precipice Trail, where if you are afraid of heights you probably shouldn't go. Day Mountain from Rt 3, which is fairly short and easy. You might try Flying Mountain with views of Somes Sound or Beech Mountain with great views looking west. In any case there are over 100 miles of beautifully maintained hiking trails on MDI and we hope you enjoy some of them. By the way did you know walking is a very good form of recovery after you run a marathon. If you are on Mount Desert Island to run or walk 26.2 miles then you are no doubt tough. So the obvious next step (or leap) is to go swimming (we're not talking heated swimming pools at your hotels either!) Go to the nearest cove or beach and jump in, then you can brag to your friends back home (who already surmise you're nuts) that you swam in 50 something degree water. By the way the water never gets warm here. Read our other marathon course previews and tips: http://www.members.boardhost.com/crowathletics/msg/1156962115.top

Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course.
We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island.
