The open area you have been running thru over the last half mile suddenly feels closer with the road narrowing and the branches of nearby trees starting to overhang the road. Turn left on Cooksey Drive and you'll start uphill. Note: if you drive the course prior to race day this looks like a tough hill from your car, but we're happy to report it runs much easier than it looks! The road winds gently ahead and its not uncommon to be accompanied by a the sounds of a babbling brook coupled with the vivid fall foliage you might think you've entered some kind of "runners paradise", all this serenity coupled with the endorphin buzz you've got going might make you want stop and meditate, please don't stop or get all ZENed out or something as there are many more surprises in the miles that lay ahead. Mile seven comes after you crest the hill and the road starts to flatten. The ocean is now dead ahead. 19.2 miles to go! Islander's tip of the day: If you want a true Maine experience and have the extra time. Go to Northeast Harbor (mile 12 on the marathon route) and take the Beal and Bunker Ferry to Great or Little Cranberry Islands. You can also get there from Southwest Harbor (finish line MDI Marathon) via the Cranberry Cove Ferry You can't take your car so park and just get on the boat. Change happens slow on these islands and lobster fishing is still the major economy. Note: Islanders are used to seeing (and love) runners as the Cranberry Isles has probably had more runners per capita qualify and run in the Boston Marathon than any town or city. Walk or run the shore path in Bar Harbor. It starts at the town pier. Just follow the seawall to your right passing in front of the Bar Harbor Inn. This path passes some of the historic "cottages" built by the rusticators who came to Bar Harbor in the 1800s. Many are now B+Bs or Inns and many support our race.(please support them!) The shore path ends at Hancock St and you can turn right and get back to Main St just down the street from the MDI Marathon starting line. You can now shop, eat or drink your way back to where you started. Read our other marathon course previews and tips:b>

Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course.
We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island.
