One idea I’ve thought would be interesting is a truly ‘home raised’ class where the exhibitor needs to be the owner of both the boar and sow used to create the animal. Ownership of both parents would need to be documented on pedigree on or before birth date of exhibited animal (or in other words can’t put somebody’s name on a pedigree a month before the show just because they have a great one). My thoughts aren’t so much that we need more classes, but more because it MIGHT drive some additional interest at our sales. And it MIGHT help stir up the genetic pool(s) a little bit. It would maybe present some challenges for youth exhibitors that don’t have the ability to keep a breeding herd on site - but it wouldn’t be mandatory or anything like that either. Not sure how much interest there would be (if any) but it’s an idea that allows for some diversity besides just the two or three ‘hot’ boars that everybody uses each season currently...which gives breeders and studs alike opportunities to see what else exists to build into their programs.
