WAVERLY - Carroll Dean Newingham, 81, of Waverly, passed away peacefully at his home Jan. 28, 2016. He was surrounded by his family and beloved caregiver Jill Lyons.
He was born on the family farm in Alsey on Oct. 25, 1934, to Ernest and Ethel Killebrew Newingham. The story was always told that the doctor who delivered Carroll was paid in pumpkins.
He married Elizabeth Agger on Nov. 25, 1954, in Jacksonville, and she survives. He is also survived by four children, Tona Smith (husband, Randy) of Alexander, Chris Newingham (wife, Cristi) of Waverly, Tammy Joseph (husband, Mark) of Jacksonville, and Terry Wells of Waverly. He has 10 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Nadine Arnold of Peoria, and Naomi Wright of Jacksonville; and a brother, Bernard Newingham (wife, Jo) of Peoria. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Lyndle Newingham, who was killed in WWII.
He graduated from Franklin High School where he was very active in 4-H, football, and FFA. He received the highest FFA degree - The American Farmer - and also served as the state FFA reporter from 1952-1953. He participated in the musical production of Oklahoma and this allowed him the opportunity to obtain his first pair of cowboy boots. He began raising livestock in 4-H, and continued to do so for most of his life.
He was a lifelong farmer in the Waverly area. He had many passions in life. For many years he raised and showed quarter horses, followed by purebred hogs. He and his family showed hogs in the summers at county fair shows, the Illinois State Fair, The Duquoin State fair, and the Kentucky State Fair. He made many friends along the way. Later he started raising American paint horses. He was very successful, and operated under the name of C&C Paints. He raised many world champions. His most famous horse was Gran Loot. Gran Loot was responsible for a legacy that spanned over 30 years. He even sired a world champion in Australia. Carroll was well known and loved in the paint horse world, and will be missed.
Carroll was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Waverly, the Moose Lodge in Jacksonville. He was also a member and past president of the Morgan Co. Saddle Club, one of the founding members of the Eight Horseman Club, 4-H Club leader, past president Illinois Paint Horse Assn., a director for the National Paint Horse Assn., and an operating engineer with Local 965 in Springfield. He worked many years in Springfield for Turcaw Inc., and later for C.D. Turner and Sons.
He never knew a stranger. He was a practical joker, and there are many memories and stories to tell. He was an amazing husband and father, and will be missed by his family and friends. Those that knew him were blessed and will remember him with a smile.
