The flames were out, only leaving behind a hanging veil of smoke and mist. The white and pink wolfress walked over the charred remanents of the battle ground from only a few hours before with an orange egg in her jaws. Cortana, though pleased with herself, couldn't help but growl. Her shoulder was in pain from the burn she had received in the fight and she was just now registering that feeling. The toes on her right fore paw ached terribly, but she knew it was just a couple broken toes. There was nothing she could do about them, but the burn would have to be addressed soon. And so she searched around for a remaining pool of water. There should be a few seeing as two dragons spewed water all over the flames to put them out...
And there one was, only a few yards away. The femora picked up her pace to a jog, grimacing with every footfall. Damn mortal flesh! The wolfess plunged her shoulder into the cold liquid as soon as she reached the pool, letting the egg drop lightly on the ground. It was soon to hatch anyway, so it really didn't matter if it cracked. In fact, whatever encouraged the little devil to hatch was all good to her. The chilled liquid numbed the pain in the wolf's shoulder, but she still let the seared skin soak for a good ten minutes.
When most of her upper body was pleasantly numb, the wolf pushed herself to her feet awkwardly. Cortana still hadn't cleaned herself from the battle, so not only was she dirty, but now a sopping wet mess. It felt horrible and she just couldn't wait to put herself in pristeen shape again. However, she needed to find somewhere to rest first. Knowing there would undoubtedly be a den around somewhere, the white an pink wolf put her nose to the ground and inhaled. She mostly picked up the scent of smoke and burned foliage, but there was a lingering stench of wolf a ways off to her left. Picking up the egg, she followed the direction on the scent with newly numbed wounds.
Cortana almost fell in the hole without seeing it, but stopped just in time. It was covered in the coral flowers, untouched by the flames of the battle. That made the cold-hearted wolf rather happy indeed. She may be and evil fey, but she enjoyed beauty. And what better than an almost fully concealed entrance to a den? Pushing by the hanging tendrils of the flowers, the wolfess entered her new home, finding it padded with soft puppy fur from years ago. Once upon a time, this den probably had a purpose, to raise pups or kits, but now it would only serve as the resting place of a lone, wounded wolf.... For now at least.
The pitch of the tunnel was steep, but widened as it went, easy to travel through. The white and pink wolf was quite pleased with the construct, knowing it may come in handy. It was far enough underground where, if she should converse with anyone, the voices would not travel to the surface. Cortana reached the solitary room at the end of the passage, finding it to be quite large and tall. No longer needing to crouch, the pink and whit wolfess raised herself up straight and peered around with the night vision canines were blessed with.
With a final huff of relief, Cortana flopped to the soft ground of the den, leaning against the back wall. Bits of earth crumbled lightly onto her fur ans she shook it off best she could. The earth seemed supple and easy enough to move. A plan began formulating in the wolf's head. Tunnels. An underground network of passages and rooms. Yes, she would turn this simple den into a lair. But not now. Now she needed rest while her coat dried out. For now, she would sleep in the warm, fur-lined room with her egg tucked safely against her. It was good to have a home.
