Posted by Street Voice I ran this interview with Tara Rez/The Duel for another site but seeing as it didn't quite work out there here it is in full. Funnily enough I was supposed to be out with Tara tonight seeing TV Smith and The Briefs play but since my legs are kinda giving away I thought I'd stay in and share this information with you guys. Aren't I sweet?!! C'mon then tell me!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway here's what Tara had to say: Tara Rez: We’re primarily song writers. We love what we do, and Andy and I have been doing this since we were about 9 years old. Paul Laventhol started King Kurt and he is the most wicked guitarist. We write songs that feel where we are at the time – We love expression and we love punk rock!! There are NO RULES !! That’s the way it stays! Peppe our second guitarist has so much passion in him and we love his Ramonesque style. Street Voice: The Duel have just recorded some of their stuff for a single with the album being recorded as we speak so what interest have you have regards both projects? Tara Rez: Well, we just got a load of the 3 track single pressed last week, so we’re busy giving them out to all that have wanted one. Response has been really cool – Few DJs have already started playing it - People love the songs and they haven’t been shy in coming forward and saying so! Even people out of the blue have sent texts to say they have been listening to the CD all day!! Its what its about for us! As for the album, we’re happy to say we have a sponsor who wants to pay for its production, which is cool – With no strings!! Just ‘cos he thinks we deserve it! We’re always getting pissed off with the quality of our home recording – Never having enough money to get the right things or fix bits that are broken! Working with Pat Collier is really brilliant. The Vibrators are my all time favourite band and have so much respect for Knox and Pat was the original bass player. We’re really happy with where everything is at right now and can’t wait till we record our first ‘proppa’ album. Street Voice: The media/record company interest in The Duel has been a little slow which is nothing short of criminal but would you say it's fair to say it's more because you've broken rules and boundaries regards your music? Tara Rez: Its true stuff we have recorded in the past has probably been too way ‘out there’ but guaranteed a couple years down the line, its what every one is doing. This has happened by accident but with The Duel we are happy we can be ourselves and that is the most important thing being who you think/hope you are to be! Its probably also true to say that we have been lazy with labels. We haven’t thrown our stuff their way too much – You contact labels and you’re immediately hit with this ‘attitude’ that I really cant be arsed with. It can be a negative thing and the easiest thing for me is to just #### it off and get on with it – Nothing else satisfies in the same way. I guess we just obsessed with writing, gigging and having contact with the people that actually love our music but we are getting to the point where need to sort something out. Its getting annoying getting e-mails from people who want to see you play or want CD’s but they’re way over the other side of the world so I guess that’s where a label comes in! Street Voice: You all have a love for music and this shows in what you do so sell yourselves to our readers in no more than 25 words? Tara Rez: One of my few mottos in life is: ‘Do what you love and love what you do’ and people will be able to see if it shines through…. Street Voice: You have your son James, a Leasing Business, FFRUK, The Duel and I know you like a drink and a good time so how do you manage to fit it all in? Tara Rez: I don’t know how I manage it! Maybe I’m on natural speed haha?! I know I’m hyperactive – but well James my son – If it weren’t for him I probably wouldn’t even bother being here no more! So I’m thankful for him – He keeps me going. My leasing business - I guess I never fitted into the corporate machine – It pissed me off too much! All that bullshit about carrots and climbing ladders who gives a ####?!! Working for myself means I don’t let any one down, if I have to go on tour for two weeks or I got a show I go and I work and pay the bills around that. It’s just easier this way. FFRUK has been a long term hobby – First started back in 1999/2000 When I was in Brighton and we put on parties. The Duel – What can I say – I would die if I couldn’t express myself and in song is the best way I know how. Street Voice: The Duel have played with some big names in the world of Punk Rock N Roll but what has been your most memorable gig to date and why? Tara Rez: Most memorable personally is playing with The Vibrators The UK Subs, I had a massive black eye from the night before and well it was the best laugh with people we love and respect XXX. Street Voice: There's been talk of you gigging in the USA so have you any concrete plans to visit there is 2005? Tara Rez: Oh shit – as concrete as quick sand!! We want to go, our fans want us there, few festivals and bands want us to play, but we need someone who knows what they’re doing to organise it for us. We’re artists not label people and its easy planning a tour of UK but USA, heck where do you start!!! It’s so bloody big!!! Nope, hands up – We need the help of professionals!! Street Voice: Being as you guys like to party there must be some drunken incidents that have had you lot in tears after the event so care to share some? Street Voice: What is your favourite Duel song and why? Street Voice: You tend to keep the politics out of your music but are their any causes that you would or have written about? Tara Rez: I get annoyed with Politics and Politicians. The way my brain works I end up always reading between the lines and to be honest it’s a waste of my energy getting worked up about something I cant change! I do care about the planet – It’s history, its future and I do care about people – Especially people who’s lives are ####ed and they feel alone by whatever the cause and there are many problems around the world. The least I can do is see and help what is around me - I do volunteer work for a charity called Release www.release.org.uk which helps people practically and realistically who are addicted to drugs – I love their work, and do a lot to promote them. You’d be surprised the number of youth and all ages – who need their services – especially living here in London – its so in your face. I hate the way Governments just turn a blind eye to ‘problem’ people I’m here for them. The Governments can #### off and look after the Middle and Upper Classes. Street Voice: So what does the future hold for The Duel? Tara Rez: Ooh… A new Album Yippee!! Can’t wait till this ones recorded ‘cos I’m gagging to write the next one! Who knows we want to play everywhere and reach loads of people! Street Voice: Anything you'd like to add? Tara Rez: I love you XXX Street Voice: I love you too XXXX So there you go and because of their love for Punk Rock you ought to check these guys out. They're one of the best bands to come out of the UK. Have a great weekend out partying while I'm at home nursing my ####ing legs - aaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhhh! Rock On! Steve DIY

Street Voice: First off introduce The Duel to the world?
Tara Rez: Haha – NO!!! Many tears, luckily more black outs – You’ll have to ask our mates ‘cos I cant remember or don’t want to!! Though one night my mate was talking to me as we were walking home from a club and she turned round and I had disappeared – Spent ages looking for me and I’d passed out on top of loads of rubbish!! And in the middle of Camden that’s probably not too clever!
Tara Rez: Well I Love ‘Right To Exist’, but I gotta say its still ‘Camden Town’ probably ‘cos I’m always broke!!
