Friday 13th started rather badly for Patchwork Grace when their van packed in 20 odd miles outside of Ashford. Turns out the radiator was missing one vital ingredient - THE WATER!!!
Poppy's dad kindly picked up some of the band and drove them to our house and Joey and Gareth(?!!) finally turned up around 4am!!!
After supping some beers and watching an Angelip Upstarts DVD everyone sodded off to bed!
My day started two hours later when Michelle's alarm clock went off as she had to get up for work. Barely a hour or so later I was down at my PO Box then set off to get my hair cut!!
By around 11am everyone was up and it was time to listen to some tunes by Pennywise, The Konks and Nashville Pussy.
Once everyone was showered etc we set off to drop the gear at the venue. When were all comfortable sitting in the van a problem then occured. it wouldn't start !!! After 3-4 attempts at bump starting it the engine kicked into life.
After everything was loaded the band went off to dinner courtesy of Poppy's dad and I went home to tidy up and catch up on some sleep once I'd scoffed down some rather tast West Indian curry.
On arrival at the venue the bands all started turning up and come 8pm the gig was well under way.
First band up were Kent Rock band 'Deff Adda' who as you can see by the photo are a very young band indeed. For an opening band and being rather new to the gig circuit they gave a reasonable account of themselves. Maybe went on a little too long and just should have restricted themselves to a 20 minute set. Their shorter songs were better. I don't think they have enough experience for all the long rock numbers/guitar solos and jumping just yet! Still that'll come with experience and if you need an opening band for your gig this could well be the band as they got a positve response from the crowd.
Next up were the Sketch who know themselves they weren't at their best. Too many silly makes that should have been avoided with such an experienced band. Still the crowd didn't mind too much and enjoyed what their half hour set. Certainly a band worth checking out and when on top form they rock!
Patchwork Grace did themelves loads of favours by not letting egos get in the way and making way for a local band to take the final slot of the night. This decision paid off and the band played to over a 100 people. All credit to them for that as many bands wouldn't have done that and simply ended up playing to a smaller crowd. Their set was just over half hour long and Tori and Co had the crowd eating out of their hands. If you weren't their to witness Patchwork Grace you certainly missed out on a great Rock band kicking ass. They pl;ayed quite a few numbers of their 'Milk Teeth' album and finishing the set with their latest single a cover of the Cure's 'The Lovecats' which went down a storm. Great band and for those who weren't there they missed out badly with this band. The crowd loved them.
Final band of the night were local favourites The 3rd Half. They did a decent set and played really well despite having no sound check and basically just plugging everything in. Mike and Co really do give it their best and the crowd loved them for that. At one point the stage had to be cleared as most of the audience were on the stage with the band as they kicked ass the 3rd Half way. Always good to see these guys play.
As usual the crowd were great and were full of spirits. A couple of them were a little light fingered but on the whole it's great to see the kids going mental. They really enjoyed what was on offer and no one left feeling cheated. It was amazing to see the kids take the gig posters for this show off the walls as they wanted something to remember the gig with. Top stuff.
The PWG stall seemed to do well and they had a crowd around them at the end of the night.
A great night had by all and watch out for the Xmas Special when the 3rd Half and Patchwork Grace talked about doing a Xmas show which will include some Xmas songs too!
See ya all at ther Sonic Boom Six / Floors & Walls Gig on Friday June 27th
