Forgot to mention, that he was most likely captured at the Battle of Pea Ridge in NW Arkansas..... many of the prisoners in Alton were from that battle....interesting note: The Cherokee Indians fought for the Confederates during the battle and one Chief is listed on the monument and his unit is: 1st Cherokee Cavalry
