CHV is a devastating disease when it strikes a litter of newborn pups. A few years ago we had an english bulldog that had eleven beautiful puppies. One died at birth and fortunately our vet froze the pup. Within days one of the pups became listless and suddenly died. We didn't really suspect anything until the next day two more pups died the same way. We called the vet and he performed a necropsy on the frozen pup and diagnosed CHV. He told us that there was no cure but some veterinarians had been seeing some success with Tamaflu sp? So per his instructions we started immediately with the treatment. He had told us that once they started displaying symptoms it was too late but it might help those with no symptoms. Unfortunately by that time all but two pups were sick and all died but those two. It was heart breaking to witness that beautiful litter of puppies die before your eyes and not be able to stop it. We had carried our girl in one final time for a sonogram before the puppies came. While in the waiting room there was a lady there with a dog she had just rescued from the pound. The dog looked healthy and he and my girl did a good bit of checking each other out. Since my dog had not been around other dogs except at the vet's I always believed that's where she picked the virus up. After that experience I do not take my dog to the vet during last few weeks of pregnancy, and then they stay in the car until vet is ready to see them. Not fool proof but makes me feel better. I read over and over that when your dog is pregnant keep her away from strange dogs. We learned this the hard way.
