You can do it with any breed. Here is a "French Bulldog" merle. Supposedly it is AKC registered and purebred. The puppy in the back, likely it's sibling, begs a different question. But anyhow, this is what the owner of the puppy said about it:
"I bought her and I have sent her paper work off to AKC to get her ped. I will send you a copy when I get it. I am new at breeding Frenchies myself but they showed me where they paid 25,000.00 for her mother she was merle and the father was blue pied. She is so pretty. I was told her granddaddy was black brindle pied and her grandmother was brindle pied also and had the merle gene he had the ice blue eyes and a lot of ticking and they breed it to a dog with those ice blue eyes not knowing it would make puppies merle that they were breeding for the eye color (Crazy blue eyes) but they came out the merle color. However I should have her pedigree in about 2 weeks. This is some Ligature they sent me http://friskafrallor.info/merle_white.html I was shock when I saw her however Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. Leif.Andersson@imbim.uu.se say this is possible, the color pattern is very rare but possible in a French Bulldog."
(I didn't contact the owner. An inquiring mind did and asked about her lineage, a pedigree, and price list. and received the above response. I don't know what the result of any followup emails were or if there were even any. I forgot about it until this thread.)
