Can beef cows get mastis. I have a cow that has just got a really big teat. The other teats are getting used when the calf tries to nurse on that the cow tries to get away. I tired to touch it but she wanted no parts of me either. Is there anything I can do or look for.

YES almost anything can get mastitis. The easiest way to tell if it is mastitis is like you said swelling, it will also be VERY tender and sore and will be hard and hot to the touch. You need to strip the teat out and treat her. We always take warm water and warm rags and massage the teat first to get it loosened up. Then we milk the teat out, be prepared its pretty nasty and painful for the cow too. She will more than likely kick like a mule, if you have a chute I would use it! After that you need to actually insert teat treatment- you can get that from most local feed stores and it will have directions. If you are unsure what to do find a local dairy farmer and ask for their help/advice. Best of luck! BTW you need to treat it- don't just hope it goes away- she could loose production in that teat if you leave it go.
