naval infection Posted by indiana on May 7, 2008, 9:36 pm 207.199.234.59 I have a month old calf with naval infection. The infection got into the back left leg, swollen from the hoof to the hock. My vet has me treating the calf with 10 units of a mix of ampicillun and dexasone every other day for 5 days. My question is will the calf have a leg problem for its life or is there something else that works for treating it. Thank You for your help.  Post a Response

Re: naval infection Posted by dragon lady on May 7, 2008, 10:16 pm, in reply to "naval infection" 216.234.99.149 A naval infection that goes to any other place (ie joint, hindleg etc) implies that bacteria have been in the blood (ie had to travel from the naval to the leg)- so it is possible that there is infection elsewhere that you do not (yet) see and may not see if the treatment works. This is a pretty serious situation - so my first concern would be make sure you cure the infection. If you can cure it you may not have any problems with the leg, but these can be pretty nasty. You might want to take the calf's temperature and if it isn't normal on day 5 contact your vet about either changing the antibiotic or continuing it for a longer period of time. You might also want to check the joints - naval infections often go to the joint and they will be swollen, warm, and sometimes tender. If you find more infection you might want to call your vet. Treated with antibiotic, vet was having her try another round, but had already spread to the leg and she decided not to wait (good thing). If it has gone to the joint or leg I would have someone look at it with more knowledge than most local vets have, if you have a vet college near you I'd have them take a look at the calf.  Post a Response
