Re: peronitis Posted by dragon lady on May 7, 2008, 9:53 am, in reply to "peronitis" 35.10.40.139 Basically an infection (means there are bugs, usually bacteria) or inflammation (no bugs, tissue irritated) of the peritoneum which is the lining of the abdomen - used to describe any infection in the abdomen that isn't tied to a specific organ. Seen with rupture of organs(esp gut or uterus), foreign body (like hardware), when fluid leaks into abdominal cavity (like with a uterine tear or c-section) - etc. Cattle are pretty good at walling off things (ie protecting themselves) by making an abscess. Depending on the cause, peritonitis can be rapidly fatal, can become chronic or sometimes can be cured. Hope that helps  Post a Response

A ONE YEAR OLD HEIFER WAS DIAGNOISED WITH IT THAT HAD A MAGNET IN HER. HER FEED HAS BEEN THE SAME SINCE NOVEMBER. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. HOW LONG BEFORE YOU WOULD KNOW IF SHE WAS GOING TO BE CURED?  Post a Response

Did she have the magnet at the time of diagnosis?? What were the signs she displayed? Was she on a hot ration? Was she treated? If so with what?  Post a Response

THE FEED RATION CONTAINS ABOUT 12% PROTEIN. SHE HAD A 106.4 FEVER. SHE DID NOT RESPOND TO DRAXIN AND BANOMINE THAT NIGHT. AFTER THAT WE TREATED HER WITH PENCILLIN FOR 13 DAY 2 TIME EACH 60CC. I HAVE BEEN TAKING HER TEMPERATURE SINCE AND IT HAS BEEN RUNNING NORMAL.  Post a Response

If not you must have studied up on your classic signs of chronic traumatic supprative fibrinopurulent reticulopericarditis (AKA Hardware disese).... Basically agree with all that DL has mentioned, cattle are very good at walling things off (w/o a doubt the hardiest of the production animal species). DL asked if she hunches her back, try to "loin her" and see if she shows signs of pain this would be an additional clinical sign in addition to what you've already seen. Sounds like she is on the right track - you seem to have a good handle on what she is like normally and pick up when things are not right - that is the key to good animal care If she had peritonitis you seem to have caught it early and taken care of it - it could of course be other infectious things, like pneumonia, but in any event it seems like you are winning.
