Use whole corn cracked won't work.I use a crock pot, fill completely with water and let cook on medium between feedings.
One other suggestion is cook barley with the corn as the corn goes to the middle and the barley goes to the top.useing one without the other will give them a stale look, and an uneven finish. hope this helps.
