DL are you a vet? If not you must have studied up on your classic signs of chronic traumatic supprative fibrinopurulent reticulopericarditis (AKA Hardware disese).... 
Basically agree with all that DL has mentioned, cattle are very good at walling things off (w/o a doubt the hardiest of the production animal species). DL asked if she hunches her back, try to "loin her" and see if she shows signs of pain this would be an additional clinical sign in addition to what you've already seen. But it sounds like your on the right track. Good luck
