Basically an infection (means there are bugs, usually bacteria) or inflammation (no bugs, tissue irritated) of the peritoneum which is the lining of the abdomen - used to describe any infection in the abdomen that isn't tied to a specific organ. Seen with rupture of organs(esp gut or uterus), foreign body (like hardware), when fluid leaks into abdominal cavity (like with a uterine tear or c-section) - etc. Cattle are pretty good at walling off things (ie protecting themselves) by making an abscess. Depending on the cause, peritonitis can be rapidly fatal, can become chronic or sometimes can be cured. Hope that helps
