My father had a small boat at Kaiser's. When I was about 5yrs.old, in the early 50's, he asked Bill Sutherland to teach me how to swim at the little beach outside Kaiser's side window. Bill put a lifejacket on me and dropped me off the end of the pilings a little way from the beach and I swam in. After awhile I was jumping off on my own then laying on the lifejacket and eventually swimming away from it. I remember Bill as a very gentle,patient man with us kids.The beach was cinders and a lot of horseshoe crabs. I used to take the rowboat out to the sunken sailboat but never got too close.Too creepy for a little kid.I was told about the boy who fell off the tower at the ferry slip so I never went out too far out exploring on that.Used to walk the rocks at low tide and find hooks an sinkers.Great place to grow up.
