I don't think that's so much the issue. Have you seen some of the clips from the 06 tour? He couldn't even stay in his upper raspy range for full lines. I don't have a problem with backing tracks to alleviate stress on the vocalist during choruses or something like that, but if your voice is completely shot, there's only so much you can do.
