Because modern music is cheap, poorly produced garbage. They do not make very much money from it from streaming services, so they have no ambition to put any sort of effort into it anymore. |
Listen to it. I've always been open to looking for new music. I still am. I've been able to count memorable songs on one hand. Most of it you cannot even tell the difference.
Listen to Power 92. The rap music is now a bunch of people on xanax mumbling about who knows what. It all sounds exactly the same. Very little of it stands out at all. It's all published on website like Soundcloud. It's so bad, anybody can do it. Look up Danielle Bregoli and how she became famous. She's signed to Atlantic records and records mumble rap, and has songs with some of the most popular mumble rappers of the day. This is where Hip-Hop music is right now.
Same goes with pop music. Just low budget electronic, not memorable at all. This is what people and programmers have to choose from.
Alternative is also in the same boat, but they have an advantage right now: A few better songs and a gold library to fall back on when there are not enough good songs.
Rock (With guitars) is all but gone from the mainstream. When I listen to Active Rock radio, most of sounds like they're trying to mimic bands like Three Days Grace. You'll forget the songs quickly.
Forgettable music. Nothing to look forward to. Low ratings. So people tune to stations that play older songs from a time when artists and writers had some creativity and could write songs.
I'm not trying to be negative, I just see things as they are right now. Go back even a handful of years (2013-2014) and there were better songs being released and Top-40, Alternative, etc had more to offer. It's all going downhill.
We can talk about how younger people may or may not be listening to the radio because they stream, but they're still getting the same garbage music.
I've been a subscriber to Apple Music since it began. You can look at what songs are the most popular on this platform by checking the charts. In most genres you'll see album cuts, songs that are in heavy rotation on the radio, songs that were very popular in past years, and in the case of rock, none of the songs are new. Africa by Toto is #1 in the rock category. Newest song is a Cranberries cover (Zombie by Bad Wolves)
