90s Post-Grunge there was a lot of overlay. |
You could hear Jewel, Alanis, No Doubt, etc alongside Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, 311, Everclear, Butthole Surfers, Matchbox 20, Sugar Ray, Counting Crows, Fiona Apple, Rage Against The Machine and Bush on Q101.
You could also hear Jewel, Alanis, and No Doubt, etc on B96 in the post-Dance ('96-'98) era.
Then came Modern AC (WTMX "101.9 Chicago's Rock Mix" and for an extremely short time WLUP) which took the softer side of Alternative (Many of the above artists) and made them into a format. It was the gap between Alternative and Hot AC, heavy on the 80s golds.
And that's not to mention the Collective Soul, Dishwalla, Gin Blossoms, Blues Traveler, Hootie & The Blowfish, etc that were in heavy rotation on the average Hot AC station.
A lot of the 90s music played on Classic Rock stations reflects somewhere in between (Collective Soul, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, etc will usually show up on 90s-friendly Classic Rockers)
