Tonight it sounds like WMFN opened up the modulation to allow more highs like 5 kHz, but there is a lot of high-frequency noise with it, even using a loop aimed at the towers near Peotone (12 miles away). This could have everything to do with me being smack in the middle of a sharp null in their nighttime pattern, though. A null dead-center at 640 kHz is not a null below and above 640 — the pattern / tower phasing is quite different +/- a few kHz so I might be hearing a suppressed carrier and lows, while the extreme highs are being grossly overmodulated… A bit like skywave signals that ebb and flow with the ionosphere. I’ll have to listen during the day when the null in their pattern is shifted a bit, or I’ll just try from another location.
