The problems with the ABC owned and operated talk stations go back to 2000. They stopped investing in talent and promotion nationwide because they were prepping the stations for sale. WABC, KGO, WLS, KABC continued to tread water because they weren’t in the long term plans of ownership. After five years in neutral, ABC sold the radio division to Citadel which declared bankruptcy. Enter Cumulus, which half assed everything and had a corporate culture that was unable to respond to a programming problem in a timely manner. WLS-AM went into a ratings free fall after the 2012 election. Cumulus didn’t make any meaningful changes until November of 2014. By that time it was too late.
