When he and Ty Wansley had the afternoon show on WLS AM and FM in the early 90's, I believe they were number 1 in their time slot many times.
I do know that Ed was very mad when they said they were breaking up the simulcast. The regular talk format would stay on AM 890 and 94.7 would become a "Hot/young" talk format to try and compete with the Loop(97.9FM). AM 1000 had already went sports.
Ed did quit, Ty tried to get him to stay, but, Ed said if he got taken off the FM he was gone, and he was.
Ed actually was in talks to buy AM 1200 at the time and put his show on there. During the day the 10,000 watt signal really blankets Eddie's old stomping grounds, but, when he realized the 1,000 watt signal at night was not very good, he gave up on that.
Ty stayed on at WLS AM with Tom Roser, who was a political columnist. The show wasn't bad, but, Ed and Ty had a chemistry that just couldn't be replicated.
They eventually teamed up for mornings on AM 1160 which was still WJJD, it had switched from it's EZ/MOR format about a year earlier to a "Hot Talk" format that was all syndicated and never really made a dent in the ratings. Ed and Ty had a good show again, but, the WJJD night signal at 5,000 watts was no match for the WLS signal. In the winter they didn't switch to 50kW until 7:15 in December, their show was more than half over by then.
If you remember when The Score was on 1160, that was a big problem for them also, hence the eventual move to 670. It was a move up for The Score from 820 and it's daytime signal, but, it was still not ideal.
Back to the Ty and Ed story, they were only on mornings for a short time when WCKG 105.9 dumped Stern, Infinity wanted Stern on in Chicago and bumped Ed and Ty to afternoon drive and put Howard Stern on 1160 in the morning.
Ed and Ty never could get back the traction they gained on WLS AM/FM. Ed should have stayed on WLS AM, the FM talk format only lasted a year, it bombed and the simulcast was back until the FM changed to country.
I know I went a LITTLE off topic here, sorry, I just started thinking about all that after seeing the question. Again, if Fast Eddie tryed to fudge the ratings in some way, I never heard anything like that. Being stubborn and killing his radio show, yea, that he did
