I am not hearing the new translator at home now, in the Oak Lawn/Alsip area, all I get is the WMBI translator. I haven't tried in the car yet. I'll check it out next time.
The 1510 is an interesting frequency, it along with 1530 get hammered worse than any others in Chicago during the winter with skywave. I often get the WI. and TN. 1510's mixing up before sunset with WWHN barely audible underneath.
The last time I checked WWHN 1510 at sunset it was not getting clobbered to badly for once, and I heard no sign off, they just dropped of the air.
I've noticed they sometimes don't shut down at tthe appointed time for the month. Sometimes it's 5 mins. late, other days it can be a half hour or more late. My guess is that they have someone at the shack in Joliet that shuts the tower on an off in the morning and evening manually.
WWHN is really an interesting station to me, one of the last of the small, independently owned daytimers that has a music format that is unique, with an owner who seems to keep it going, because he enjoys it, not to make much of a profit.
I hope he can continue doing this, it has got to be very hard these days. I am not a big Gospel music fan, but, I have listened on occasion and think this little station is much better than 1390.
You mentioned the old WBEE 1570, that was a cool little station, real jazz, with a few oldies, even Sinatra and Sammy thrown in for good measure.
They had some really cool hosts also, I remember they had a guy that did the 5-9PM shift before the change to Gospel, he was an older guy, reminded me of a Pegue or Kent. He always had an intersting fact or thought when coming on the air. He had a very distinctive show and KNEW about the music he was playing and was allowed to talk about it. Do you remember him or his name? It escapes me now.
WBEE was a refreshing change from all the other stations at that time. When you got sick of the same ol' same ol' you could tune in 1570 for a couple of hours and truly kick back and enjoy some good music.
I hadn't though of that station for quite some time, I'm glad you brought it up.
I like topics like this, I could probably go on for hours talking about all the cool little AM's around Chicago that are now gone or changed.
The former WCGO(1600), WKKD 1580AM, WAUR 930AM, WJPC 950AM, WJOB 1230AM, WCFJ 1470AM and many more.
To bad radio isn't much fun anymore, I guess time marches on, thanks a lot smartphones...LOL
