Bottom line, SXM gets you commercial free music. It gets you 70s or 80s or 90s or 2K for example that no one on terrestrial can offer you, even on HD. If broadcasters made a concerted effort on their HD subchannels, perhaps the OP would NOT be exploring and paying for sat service. It is turn key, at a price. Perfect for on the go, more affluent and busy parents.
Or, if you have time, which I know I do not, you can tailor your own USB drive of music. Or pre program a streaming service, if you have reliable high speed wireless net.
Concerning artist payments, that is a lost cause whether they get paid on iTunes, SXM, YouTube or any other service is sometimes less than a penny a play. The artists make money playing live.
