Spent a weekend in Ontario earlier this month. Drove back thru southern Michigan, Northern Indiana, etc. Radio was alive and kicking in many of these areas.
Then I ended up in Chicago. I turned on the radio coming into Chicago. A major market. I got so sickened by the excessive Voltair distortion, lack of anything unique, the genericness, just whatever desperate thing they could do to keep people from changing the station. It's all about keeping the meter running. There were only a handful of stations I could stand to listen to.
Then there's the constant obsessive use of the "Brand" "Our brand." "Our amazing brand" "Our brand" It's not a BRAND. It's a freaking radio station with a name or a set of call letters. It's not a product. It's an FCC licence serving a community.
NAB and the FCC goes on about EAS alerts. Large market stations, especially Chicago often just bypass running EAS activations to keep people from tuning out. If the DJ happens to be live, they might mention it quickly into a commercial.
AM and FM Radio has an amazing ability to connect to the people listening locally. Some stations do.
Companies like Entercom, iHeart etc force feed their "Brands" on everybody instead of the local content. The local airstaff sound more and more like they're being used as robots instead of personalities. There's no connection to anything. Traffic reports are commercials now. Weather reports are commercials. They give little traffic or weather information, and spend most of that yapping about whoever the sponsor is. Why bother?
And then there's when companies flip formats, fire someone, bunch of frustrated listeners go to social media asking them what happened, why. They just ignore them or give them a canned message 99% of the time. They don't care.
Why listen to AM and FM radio if you can get the same lifeless junk on a mobile app? That's the problem. There is an advantage to having a local operation in a community, but the companies have their heads so far up their bottom lines and egos that they cannot even try to make it work. They would rather just let it rot and rake in the money.
I'm sick and tired of it. It gets worse and worse every year, been at a real peak in recent years.
