WJKL has been a “Chicago” thing since 1999 or so when One On One Sports moved there from AM 950. After WCBR was sold, WJKL went from a Satellite AC station for Elgin to being pimped out by it’s owner except for 3-5AM on Saturdays when they still ran some Satellite AC. They were the Chicago affiliate for a Skokie based national Sports talk network from 6AM-6PM and 10PM-Midnight and most of the weekends. Rest was a bunch of funky brokered talk and blues rock.
Fast forward to 2000. One On One Sports was to be rebranded Sporting News Radio. They wanted more airtime, so they went to 820 WCSN.
What to do with WJKL? Well EMF was mostly in smaller markets and out west. Salem still was a few days away from launching 106.7 The Fish and boom. Elgin Broadcasting Co leased WJKL to EMF with the option to buy after 8 years. They bought it and upgraded the signal. Did what Elgin Brodcasting Co was unable to do. Give it a city grade signal into Chicago.
Also, since getting on the air in Market #3 in 2001, K-LOVE grew from a small-medium sized CCM Network to the huge network it is today.
WJKL did a lot for a little suburban Class A
