The pocket antenna I have is the Archer brand, the size of a deck of cards. It's ancient (1980s), has a built-in amplifier which I usually leave off/bypassed, and works well for HD. And yes, by changing the radial lengths it works well for scanning from 27 through 1296 MHz.
As for SWL, I picked up an awesome ICOM R8500 a few months ago when the microcontroller chip died in my trusty old
Electra/Bearcat DX-1000. Most international shortwave broadcasters are gone, but there are still a few out there. Religious broadcasters are carrying the torch these days.
