The question is how much will this hurt WGN-TV over the long run? Channel 9's brand is the warm and fuzzy good neighbor. The home of sports, Bozo and your pals on the Morning News. It is not a combatant in the culture wars.
We've seen how moving away from "brand" can wound a station for a long time. WGN-AM never really recovered from Randy Michaels' attempts to turn it into WLW circa 1988. Channel 2's has been stuck in third place (sometimes fourth, sometimes fifth) since went from Bill and Walter to tabloid news in 1992. TV news directors are probably working on plans to pick up disaffected Channel 9 viewers.
