Actually MTV/VH1 is having a hard time re-inventing themselves since the reality TV phase is dead too.
There is no upside for music producers and the companies to release better music. If they are profiting, that is all that matters. All you need is a pretty boy or cute girl, an angry rapper or a bunch of guys that pretend they are playing rock n roll music to be on stage, sell merchandise and pack stadiums.
In a year or year and a half we will know what will come to the top again (hip hop, cheese pop or who knows what) making CHR happy. The underground sound that the young ones are listening to is post-dubstep and noise, an offshoot of industrial. Def not mainstream radio material.
