For me, I think the biggest factors are two fold: the evolution of media/technology (listening and listening methods) and radio as a corporate-structured business (consolidation, mergers, etc.).
The Ball may be dropping tonight ushering another New Year, but, for many of us we would wish to turn back the years and somehow have radio and ownership as it was prior to the dreaded Telecommunications Act of 1996.
WBUS-FM 99.9 was a very interesting Top 40/CHR station back in the day which featured local ownership and a very interesting playlist. It was also very interesting trying to listen on certain days given three other co-channels nearby. (No option to click and listen on-line back in the 80's and early to mid 90's.)
