Very little is known about the life of Hieronymus Bosch but he was considered a religious person who belonged to a Christian organization. His paintings are full of symbolism. Panel 3 of this painting is a depiction of hell, with symbolic references to the sins of greed, sex outside of marriage, gambling, gluttony, music that is not a religious hymn, and other vices. The human beings are usually naked, while the demons usually have some clothing. Scroll down and you will see a rabbit wearing a jacket (meaning he is one of the demons) who was hunting and is carrying a dead human on a pole. The original painting was obtained by a king of Spain, and I believe it still hangs in the castle. Art scholars still debate over the meaning of all his paintings. This is one of my favorites.
