Sophie is generally a sweet, friendly cat, though she can get a bit feisty sometimes. She is often on one of the tall cat trees in the room, staying somewhat away from the other cats. She has climbed on my back when I bend over next to the cat tree, and she seemed quite happy there. LOL
Now everything was going fine. The shelter manager came in to get Sophie, and put flea meds on her before putting her into a cat carrier. Sophie jumped up onto one of the wide window sills in the room, which unfortunately happened to also be occupied by a smaller female black cat name Alicia.
Alicia is also very friendly...... to people. However, she seems to hate other cats, and will swat any other cat in the room who gets too close, and that is exactly what happened just a the manager went up to Sophie. Alicia smacked Sophie right in the face, a really good swat, and Sophie freaked out, jumping down to the floor, and then racing up to the top of the cat tree across the room. The manager went over there to try and get Sophie, but Sophie wasn't having any of it, and flattened her ears back as she hissed loudly when the manager tried to reach up to her.
He finally gave up and left the room, explaining to the two women what had happened. I tried to calm Sophie down by putting some treats up on her perch, and she gobbled them down. After waiting a bit the manager came back in and tried to get Sophie again, but again Sophie started hissing at him, so he left and told the women this just wasn't going to happen today, and they could come back next week to try again if they wanted.
But the one woman seemed to want to get a cat today, so she and the manager went back to the BIG room to look at some other cats she had liked. She picked out another black and white female cat named Speedy, who is also a very nice friendly cat. In fact the manager came back carrying Speedy in his arms, as she was calm, unlike Sophie. He put Speedy in a cage in the reception area while paperwork was done, and I tried to reach my fingers through the bars to scratch her head & neck.
The manager then put flea meds on Speedy, and then into the cat carrier for the women to take her home. By then I could see Sophie had sorta calmed down, and she eventually even laid down to take a nap.
So close to being adopted, if not for that swat from Alicia.
