Posted by Nikita I have a similar situation to yourself. I have long hair, have not had a perm since last summer, and do not want to cut off the permed hair, and my mother doesn't like the fact that i am going nature. I have also contemplated getting a perm again, but then I think of all the time i will have waisted growing it out thus far. I often search the web for inspiration in growing out my natural hair and that helps to read about other success stories. I also have the support of my hair-dresser(whom I don't go to often because i grew up doing my own hair). I see her about every 2 months and she deep conditions my hair and trims the ends and tells me that I can do it and gives me compliments on my hair. that is also motivating, so i just keep on trying to keep the faith. Girl, i know it is hard, but do not give up!!!!! email me if you need to. I am here for you! Nikita --Previous Message--

Hi Songbird,
: I cut my hair and it was the most liberating
: thing I ever did. I just did it. Do not care
: what others think because the only skin that
: counts is your own. Some people like my
: hair, some don't but I LOVE it and that is
: all that matters. I see other people that
: have gone natural and see many beautiful
: hairfoos. Seeing others go natural is like
: a secret bond that you have with that person
: because they are defying what society calls
: beautiful (long, straight, blond).
:
: I grew up with different permed hair styles
: and when the 6-8 weeks came to retouch I did
: it religiously. Natural hair is less
: expensive but get the right products for
: you. When it was time for a perm I thought
: my hair was nappy (brainwashed). But when I
: went natural my hair is soft and curly.
: None of the kinky stuff that I thought I
: had. Perms destroy the real texture. I am
: teaching my niece that natural hair is
: beatiful hair kinky, straight, or otherwise.
:
: Good luck to you in getting your hair to
: cooperate.

: Hey everyone. I stopped perming my hair
: about
: nine months ago, and the growth is amazing.
: My hair doesn't shed as much as it used to
: and it just keeps growing. However, for the
: past month I have had it in braids, because
: I knew I would be tempted to perm it if it
: wasn't. I still have a considerable amount
: of perm, I just can't bring myself to cut it
: off. I have been cutting it monthly, but I
: don't believe I will look attractive with
: short hair. Anyway, this past weekend I
: washed it and conditioned it,and I don't
: know what to do. I am contemplating going
: back to relaxers. I am just not confident in
: my appearance anymore, and I don't like not
: feeling like a beautiful black woman. At the
: same time, I don't want to feel like I
: wasted nine months trying to get this thing.
: But I dunno, the color is different and
: everything. I have never colored my hair,
: and I didn't realize how much the relaxers
: had lightened it. But I like the lighter
: color. Anyway, I need some support. I'm in
: college and most of my friends are still
: perming there hair and they look great. My
: mother doesn't want me to grow it out
: anyway, and no one really believes that I
: can do this thing. I want to believe I can,
: but I am starting to see that maybe I can't.
: Thanks for listening.
:
: Songbird.
