I went to a dermatologist and she did a skin biopsy, taking a sample from the trouble spot in the center of my head. The actual diagnosis is called "scarring alopecia" and this particular kind only seems to affect black women. There is no positive cause but it is theorized 'what do black women do to their hair?' We put chemicals in it along with excessive heat. No one knows why it affects some of us and not others. My hair has always been thin and in retrospect, I probably never should have gone down the relaxer road and now I'm paying for it. Go to a dermatologist, preferably an african american one who understands what we do to our hair and see what he/she can do for you. Good luck.

: Last year I was diagnosed with scarring
: alopecia. Even though I am rather young and
: have only had relaxers for 8 years I have
: this problem in the center of my head. I'm
: not completely bald but the hair is short
: and my dermatologist says that the hair loss
: may be permanent. I let the relaxer grow
: out for one year and went back to the hot
: comb but didn't like this alternative. The
: doctor (an african american woman with
: natural curly hair) wanted me to stop all
: chemicals and heat which I tried to do for a
: while. I got an affirm sensitve scalp
: relaxer and don't plan on getting another
: for four months. In the meantime I am
: looking for natural styles but frankly I
: don't really like them. I like braids but I
: can't wear them too long because my hair is
: so fragile and I don't like locs. What
: other alternatives do I have? My hair is
: fine and shoulder length. When I wash it
: it's very kinky and draws up quite a bit.
: Where can I find natural hair styles for
: long hair that promote healthy hair without
: heat, chemicals, pulling, etc.?
