Hi,
You're going natural, and that's a big step. I did the same thing while in college a year ago. I wore wraps all the time, and educated myself about the step I was about to take before I cut it... I read a book entitled "Textured Tresses," Essence magazine has a book about black woman health (check bookstores or go online and find it,) whcih talks a lot about hair, and I spoke to anyone I saw who had natural hair. All my friends have perms, too but girl when you finally get then nerve to cut it, you'll fell free. I can't really explain it any better than that... you'll feel free.
Also, if you feel that you really want to get a perm again, go ahead. You are you, and in college, it's important to find you, experiment and become comfortable in yourself. I know tons of people who've gone back and forth b/w relaxers and natural hair, either way it's important to maintain a sense of self, and keep whatever style you choose 'up'. Regardless of whatever step you choose, I know you are a beautiful black sister, it's a prerequisite to who Black women are...
Hope this helps.
: Hey everyone. I stopped perming my hair about
: nine months ago, and the growth is amazing.
: My hair doesn't shed as much as it used to
: and it just keeps growing. However, for the
: past month I have had it in braids, because
: I knew I would be tempted to perm it if it
: wasn't. I still have a considerable amount
: of perm, I just can't bring myself to cut it
: off. I have been cutting it monthly, but I
: don't believe I will look attractive with
: short hair. Anyway, this past weekend I
: washed it and conditioned it,and I don't
: know what to do. I am contemplating going
: back to relaxers. I am just not confident in
: my appearance anymore, and I don't like not
: feeling like a beautiful black woman. At the
: same time, I don't want to feel like I
: wasted nine months trying to get this thing.
: But I dunno, the color is different and
: everything. I have never colored my hair,
: and I didn't realize how much the relaxers
: had lightened it. But I like the lighter
: color. Anyway, I need some support. I'm in
: college and most of my friends are still
: perming there hair and they look great. My
: mother doesn't want me to grow it out
: anyway, and no one really believes that I
: can do this thing. I want to believe I can,
: but I am starting to see that maybe I can't.
: Thanks for listening.
