Actually the high surge is the the ringing power coming from the magneto when you crank the tel set. Sometimes party A and party B has the same trpe of set (i.e. when A wanted to call B, A must crank their set and vice versa, BUT when cranking the set DO NOT LIFT YOURSET IN YOUR EAR and the one being called must wait the ringing to stop.).
I wish I am there to give you some pointers of how to use this king of phone system works. Before I forget, each set has its own battery for talking supply without of which no conversation is possible.
