  • Advertising your training sessions

Posted by Audrey Harvey on 7/9/2009, 11:17 am

Our library has been relying on the Community announcements section of our local paper to publicize FDO training sessions. Unfortunately, the newspaper seems to have cut back drastically on these announcements and as a result, our attendance at today's session was very small. Any ideas on other ways that we can get the word out to the non-profits in our area? I'm located in Bethlehem, PA.

I've had great success in teaming with our county's United Way office. They have a huge e-mail base of the county's nonprofit orgs. & an online newsletter. My notices get to them quickly and I have SRO audiences. I also use our library website, flyers, paper newsletter, and will use Twitter now that my library's twittering.

I'm glad to hear that you're working with your local United Way, Marybeth. United Ways can be great partners for our CCs and they usually do have substantial databases of names of potential customers for your Collection. I also want to put in a plug for asking your local United Way to subsidize or sponsor a day of training at your library for their audiences. That has worked well in other communities. And of course, Twitter is great, as long as you have a large group and the right group of folks following you.

We do a variety of advertising, on our website, library newsletter and e-newsletter. Our events are also often listed in the local newspaper. I also do an email newsletter specifically for our nonprofit resource center. In the past, we have also printed a postcard listing our annual schedule of workshops and then mail to local nonprofits.

          Hi,
Our events get advertised on our website, paper newsletter and through our e-newsletter.
Within the past few months I've started using twitter as another way to get the word out.
I also heavily rely on the community connections that I've made to help spread the word. It goes both ways of course and I will gladly spread the word about their events.

            Andrea-

Thanks for your response. I guess we will have to work on building up our community connections to get the word out. Using Twitter is also a great idea. Thanks.
