Re: Billions in free grant money!!

Actually, there is nothing anyone can do because the businesses that make these claims have a very slick infomercial that clearly states that monies are available through 'grants, loans, federal subsidies, and other funding opportunities' to accomplish a wide range of...ambitions; i.e., buy a house, go into business for yourself, go back to school, pay off your bills. The biggest culprit is the "National Grants Conference," which has been covered by "Dateline" and "60 Minutes." People only hear the word "grants" and "free." There is nothing "free" about these guys, they are now charging $1300.00 for very useless information. I had someone here that paid $1300.00 to get a "proposal" written so that they could get a grant to "buy" houses to "rent" at a low fee to needy families. They had this idea all twisted in their mind that this was a "good deed to do for the community." The National Grants Conference folks kept giving her the run-around about her "proposal," and finally said the our library would write the proposal for her because we are a Foundation Center Cooperating Collection. By the time she got to me she was hot and demanding. I could only listen to her saga and then tell her the truth: She had been ripped off. I told her that the likelyhood of her getting her money back was between slim and none. She should have taken her $1300.00 and put a down payment on a house.

I try to warn grantseekers that come to us and to our workshops to be on the lookout for companies that make these types of claims. I say to them, if you have to pay money first-a red flag should go up and you know that it is not what you want. Keep your money, come to the library first!
