Hi, My daughter Heather is 10 years old. She had a poor suck, swallow, feed when she was born. Her muscles were weak and she was unable to keep her mouth closed when she was sucking on the bottle. So most of her formula was on her. We learned shortly after she would need heart surgery, which explained why she tired during eating. We did get Heather a Haberman nipple, which helps with feedings, keeps the formula in the bottle and releases it when the baby sucks on it, it really made a difference for us. WE dealt with feeding issues for a very long time, Heather was listed as failure to thrive, and finally we had to give up on feeding her orally cause she just wasn't growing. In either 1998 or 1999 we put in a Gtube, which turned out to be the best thing ever!! Although she was not expected to grow, she grew in leaps and bounds, I sure wish we had done it earlier, but we didn't know how much she would change. Heather had a gastric pullup in 2001, so the gtube became a jtube and she is still currently fed this way....however, with lots of work, she is now eating pureed baby foods and working on chunks..(Heather is also blind and very orally defensive....actually not as bad as she used to be) We are now going to have her tested again for her allergies, she is allergic to all dairy, peanuts, eggs, dust and mold. We found about the eggs and peanuts when I tried to feed her orally....she blew chow everywhere! And hopefully we can teach her to eat orally and get off of the tube!!
