Posted by sv the first plane (US Airways) hit the first (i think it was the south) world trade center tower earlier this morning. it was originally believed to be a freak accident, so most people were evacuated or moved to the second tower. 18 minutes later, a second hijacked plane (United Airlines) hit the second tower, causing it to entirely collapse. minutes later, a highjacked plane (US Airways) crashed into the side of the pentagon in washington dc. seconds after the plane crash, a car bomb exploded inside the u.s state department, just behind the white house. another plane (United Airlines) went down just outside pittsburgh in somerset county, and camp david in maryland was also harmed by explosions. personally, i can not say much about the situation in new york or somerset county, but i personally witnessed the chaos in dc. i could hear the plane hit the pentagon this morning (as my school is less than a mile and a half away from the pentagon) and saw the building erupt in flames and smoke from my dorm room window, which has a clear view of the building. our campus was quickly swarmed by military presence, and movement on and off campus was restricted. water was cut off in downtown dc, as water was needed to combat the fires at the pentagon, as well as due to the threat of biological warfare through water poisoning. phone lines have just been clearing up in the past few hours, and cell phone networks have just recently been re-established. the entire campus is in shock, as the majority of the students here have family that work in the world trade center, pentagon, state department, or camp david. here on campus, interfaith vigils have been set up, classes have been cancelled indefinitely, georgetown hospital is packed with people, and blood donor clinics are popping up everywhere on campus. counselling services are being offered everywhere, as there are many who are still unable to get in touch with family members and are feeling quite distraught. many of my close friends here at GU have potentially lost close family and friends, and the general feeling on campus is one of fear, pain, sadness, and melancholy, accompanied with a sense of disbelief. i personally keep feeling this is a nightmare that i hope to wake up from soon, but then i look out my window and see the cloud of smoke that hangs over the potomac river and the pentagon. i surely hope that the rest of you are coping well with these tragic events, and that all in all life is treating you relatively well. i send a prayer to all those affected, either directly or indirectly. do take care. sv
