problem with doc /excel files

I've a PC with win98, facing a problem concerned with the opening of .doc files. Each time when i click onto the icon of any doc file it immidiately gets converted into an exe file however the name (with extention) diplayed is always doc but it now having an icon of windows default icon for .exe file . pls help
