Blank on Start up

Hello. I am running windows XP home edition and I was using a different monitor while at college. After coming home and using a different monitor, the screen goes blank when windows should boot. With my viewsonic monitor I get a "viewmeter error." I tried a friend's dell monitor and got a out of scan range message during the same part of the boot sequence. Any suggestions?
