I'm researching for a novel inspired by my gg-grandparents Caudill and am trying to get a better understanding of Breathitt County around 1860. The census helps by listing the occupations, but that raises more questions. Like - how did blacksmiths get their iron? Was it packed in by mule? Were there wagon roads to bring in goods from VA or central KY? Was there any KY River traffic in 1860? Any info about what it was like living in Breathitt County in 1860 would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
