Posted by Charles Hayes on 9/20/2007, 3:16 pm, in reply to "Magoffin Baptist Institute" Information might be obtained from Oneida Institute in Clay County. They own the land where Magoffin Institute was located in Breathitt County, and in later years the two schools were closely connected. Also, Mr. James Allen in Salyersville would be a good source of information. I don't have his address, but he shares photos in the Kentucky Explorer. He once showed me some photos of Magoffin Institute while it was still located in Magoffin County. Also, you may want to contact the Magoffin County Historical Society in Salyersville. They are very active, and probably can help. There are probably graduates of the Institute living in the Frozen area of Breathitt County who might help.
Magoffin Institute began almost 100 years ago near Salyersville in Magoffin County. However, for some reason the school moved to a remote section of Breathitt County on Frozen Creek called Mountain Valley. Until the 1970s it included a grade and high school, both now closed.
