I am relativly new to this hobby, but what I think you need to do is take a few minutes and read the directions. If you don't have them http://www.terrybullard.com/Detector_Manuals.html Go to the link I have just inserted in this mail. Set the detector for ALL Metal. (Toggle switch in the middle) and then scan the ground and check out every repeatable signal. (meaning if you hear it once and then scan a few more times in the same place and don't hear the signal again don't bother) The nice thing about your detecting (I assume) is that no digging is involved. When scanning, the main thing is to take your time and overlap your swings so you don't miss anything. Go one direction over the whole area and if you don't find the earing, then go 90 degrees to the first scanning direction. Make sure you keep the coil (round thing on bottom of detector) parallel to the ground and smooth. Patience will get you a lot. Good luck and keep us posted
