2 or 3 Battery Confusion TR550-D

I have an old TR550-D and it holds 3 9volt batteries. Everything I have seen on this machine, including the owners manual generously sent by Greg, suggests that it only holds 2 9 volt batteries. My electronic buddy states that the wiring all looks "factory". Anyone out there have a clue?
