I have this book and I found very useful and informative when I was doing the course, Exploring History: Medieval to Modern, 1400 - 1900. One section of the course covered the development of Europe up to the 1st World War and this book was a great resource to have. As you say not a book to try and read intensively. It's best if you read a section at a time.
